Fort McMurray sits about 750 km north of Calgary, roughly eight to nine hours of driving on Highways 2, 28 and 63. A full household move from Calgary typically costs $3,200 CAD to $7,500 CAD, depending on volume and season. Your rotation, your housing type and your move month matter more than distance.
How far is Fort McMurray from Calgary and how long does the move take?
The route runs Calgary to Edmonton on Highway 2, northeast on Highway 28 or Highway 55 to Grassland, then north on Highway 63 into the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Distance is 740 to 770 km.
A loaded truck is slower. Carriers plan one driving day for the linehaul, plus a loading day and an unloading day. Dedicated moves deliver in two to four days. Shared-load shipments take seven to fourteen days.
Camp rotation or living in town: how your schedule changes the move
Your rotation sets the size of the move more than your income does. Three patterns dominate Wood Buffalo hiring.
Workers on a 14/14 or 20/8 rotation who keep a Calgary home base move almost nothing. Camp supplies the bed, the meals and the laundry. The move is two duffel bags, boots, PPE and a laptop.
Workers taking a residential position, or bringing a partner and children, run a conventional household move: a two or three bedroom load of 4,000 to 9,000 lb, plus a vehicle.
The third pattern is the solo rental in Thickwood, Timberlea or the lower townsite. Solo renters bring a partial load and buy the rest locally. They most often overpay by freighting cheap furniture north.

These are planning brackets, not quotes. They shift with fuel, season and access.
What does a Calgary to Fort McMurray move actually cost?
Alberta carriers price long moves on weight or cubic volume, then add distance, access and service charges. Three line items drive the variation.
Weight is the base. A two bedroom apartment at 4,000 lb prices very differently from a four bedroom house at 11,000 lb. Distance is fixed near 750 km, so quotes rarely diverge there.
Access charges matter more than people expect. Many Fort McMurray addresses sit on cul-de-sacs or narrow winter streets where a 53 foot trailer cannot turn. The carrier then shuttles the load in a smaller truck. Budget $400 to $900.
Deadhead is the quiet cost. Northbound freight into Wood Buffalo is plentiful and southbound backhaul is thin, so carriers return to Calgary partly empty and price that in. When you compare quotes from a Calgary to Fort McMurray moving company, ask three things: is the estimate binding or non-binding, is shuttle service included, and what does storage in transit cost if your possession date slips. Those answers explain most of the gap between two prices.
Confirm packing materials, appliance disconnect fees, long carry charges and valuation coverage. Released-value protection is the legal minimum and pays per pound, not replacement value. The Canadian Association of Movers publishes plain guidance on both.
Highway 63 and Highway 881: what carriers watch
Highway 63 is the main artery. The Government of Alberta completed twinning between Grassland and Fort McMurray in 2016, removing most of the head-on collision risk behind the road’s older reputation. The corridor is still remote. Services are sparse between Wandering River and the city limits.
Highway 881 is the eastern alternate through Lac La Biche, Conklin and Anzac. It is two lane, undivided, and carries heavy industrial traffic. It serves as the detour when Highway 63 closes. Carriers avoid it in winter.
From November to March, blowing snow, ice fog and black ice close both highways with little notice. Moose and deer are most active at dawn and dusk. Check Alberta 511, and expect a carrier to quote a delivery window with a weather buffer.
Wildfire and flood season: scheduling and insurance
Wood Buffalo carries two seasonal hazards. The 2016 Horse River wildfire forced roughly 88,000 residents out in May. In April 2020, an ice jam on the Athabasca and Clearwater rivers flooded the lower townsite and displaced about 13,000 people. Wildfire threat returned in 2024.
Avoid a delivery date in the first three weeks of May, which overlaps early wildfire risk and river breakup. Confirm in writing what your carrier’s coverage and your own policy do if the load sits in storage during an evacuation order.
Housing in Fort McMurray: rent or buy after 2016?
The Fort McMurray market has not returned to its pre-2015 peak. Average residential sale prices have generally sat in the $400,000 to $475,000 range in recent years, below Calgary averages. Two bedroom apartments commonly rent between $1,500 and $2,000. CMHC’s Rental Market Survey carries current Wood Buffalo figures.
Rent if your posting runs under two years or your role is not permanent. Buy when both partners have local work and you plan to stay past a full commodity cycle.
Utilities need lead time. ATCO distributes electricity and natural gas, and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo bills water, sewer and waste. Open accounts seven to ten business days before possession. Internet installation in newer Timberlea builds can take three weeks.
Cost of living and the northern residents deductions
Groceries, fuel and vehicle servicing cost 10 to 20 percent more in Fort McMurray than in Calgary. Wages usually offset the gap, but the difference lands monthly.
On tax relief, be careful. The Canada Revenue Agency offers northern residents deductions to people who live in a prescribed northern or intermediate zone for at least six consecutive months. Fort McMurray has not appeared on that zone list, while communities further north such as Fort Chipewyan do qualify. Verify your eligibility against the CRA’s current list, or with an accountant, before budgeting around the deduction.
What to move and what to buy on arrival
Freight is priced by weight, so the arithmetic is simple. Ship what is expensive, light or irreplaceable. Buy locally what is heavy, cheap or bulky. Freighting a $300 particleboard dresser 750 km rarely pays.
Ship: clothing, bedding, tools, electronics, documents and winter gear.
Buy locally: particleboard furniture, older mattresses, patio sets, large appliances if the unit is equipped, and outdoor gear.
Add for the north: a block heater cord, a vehicle emergency kit, boots rated to minus 40 and winter tires.
A numbered sequence for a work-start-date-driven move
- Confirm your start date, rotation and any relocation allowance in writing.
- Ten weeks out, choose camp rotation, solo rental or full relocation. That choice sets everything else.
- Eight weeks out, secure housing. Rent unless the role is permanent.
- Seven weeks out, book the carrier. Get surveys from three companies and compare binding against non-binding estimates.
- Five weeks out, arrange vehicle transport and confirm whether your street needs a shuttle.
- Three weeks out, open ATCO and municipal utility accounts and book internet installation.
- Two weeks out, update your Alberta Health Care and driver’s licence address, and register children with a school division.
- One week out, confirm the delivery window and the weather contingency. Leave two spare days before your start date.
- On arrival, note damage on the bill of lading before the crew leaves.
